The area offered two essential elements for a wool manufacturing industry:

an abundance of water;

the widespread presence of sheep farming on Monte Amiata.

Water became the true driving force of the factory, while wool from local flocks provided the raw material for textile production.

A modern factory for its time

The mill was created with the aim of developing a large and diversified textile production. Inside the workshops workers produced:

blankets;

coverlets;

carpets;

fabrics for clothing;

textile goods for everyday use.

To start production, machinery from an old Roman wool mill formerly belonging to the Papal States was purchased and transferred to Arcidosso after the flood of the Tiber River in 1870, which had damaged industrial facilities near Piazza Trilussa in Rome.

The construction of the factory faced major technical and economic difficulties. Work began in 1877 but proceeded slowly due to the complexity and cost of the project. Despite these challenges, the Lanificio gradually developed into an important industrial reality for the Amiata region.

The Acqua d’Alto valley

The industrial complex stood in an isolated valley rich in springs, surrounded by ancient chestnut forests and crossed by streams descending from Monte Amiata.

Historical documents describe an extraordinary natural environment where the waters converged into waterfalls and artificial drops used to power the turbines of the mill.

The waterfall of the Acqua d’Alto was already famous centuries before the construction of the factory. According to historical accounts, Pope Pius II Piccolomini himself visited the site during his stay on Monte Amiata, attracted by the purity of its waters and the beauty of the natural falls.

A center of work and community

For many years the Lanificio di Arcidosso represented one of the main industrial activities of the area. Around the factory grew a small community of workers, technicians and families connected to wool production.

Historical accounts also remember how the construction of the mill attracted the curiosity of local residents and children who regularly watched the works taking place in the valley.

Over time the factory passed under the management of several families and companies, including the Torracca and Ariani families, who contributed to the continuity of the industrial activity during the following decades.

Industrial memory of Monte Amiata

Today the Lanificio di Arcidosso remains an important testimony to the industrial history of Monte Amiata.

Although the factory has long been abandoned, its memory still recalls a time when water, wool and craftsmanship formed the heart of the local economy.

Historical photographs, maps and technical drawings preserved in period documents continue to make it possible to reconstruct the functioning of the complex and the deep relationship between industry and territory on Monte Amiata.

Historical sources

Texts and historical documentation based on “Il lanificio di Arcidosso” by Giacomo Ariani, published in Arcidosso, il tempo che fu (2005).

The Lanificio di Arcidosso In the heart of Monte Amiata, surrounded by forests and crossed by the clear waters of the Acqua d’Alto valley, one of the most important textile mills of the region was established in the late nineteenth century: the Lanificio di Arcidosso.
