The streams descending from Monte Amiata were therefore transformed into a complex hydraulic system composed of canals, pipelines, artificial drops, water intakes and turbines capable of powering the machinery of the mill.

The factory produced:

wool blankets;

carpets;

fabrics for clothing;

coverlets;

textile products for daily use.

Part of the industrial machinery came from an older Roman wool mill that had been damaged during the flood of the Tiber River in 1870.

Over the following decades the Lanificio di Arcidosso became one of the most important industrial activities in the area. Around the factory developed a small community of workers, technicians and families connected to textile production and the maintenance of the hydraulic system.

During the early twentieth century the management of the mill became closely connected to the Torracca family, whose name appears in several historical company records linked to the factory.

The Ariani family also played an important role in the later history of the industrial complex. Among the most significant figures was Edoardo Pozzi, husband of Aldina Ariani, remembered as an administrator deeply involved in the management of the factory and in the development of the hydraulic works connected to the Acqua d’Alto valley.

Historical documents also connect the hydraulic system of the mill to the construction of the first water supply infrastructure for the town of Arcidosso.

During the twentieth century the textile activity gradually declined as industrial and economic conditions changed. The factory slowly lost its productive importance and many structures were eventually abandoned.

In later years the area underwent another transformation through the extraction of the so-called “red earth”, a natural pigment material present in the valley. Quarrying activities altered the original landscape of the industrial site and marked the final phase of the history of the Lanificio di Arcidosso.

Today the ruins of the factory, together with the surviving canals, pipelines and hydraulic structures, remain an important testimony to the industrial history of Monte Amiata and to the relationship between industry, water and landscape in the Acqua d’Alto valley.

Historical texts and documentation based on “Il lanificio di Arcidosso” by Giacomo Ariani, published in Arcidosso, il tempo che fu (2005).

The History of the Lanificio di Arcidosso The Lanificio di Arcidosso was founded in 1877 in the Acqua d’Alto valley, near the town of Arcidosso, on the slopes of Monte Amiata in southern Tuscany.
