It was part of a larger territorial system connected to:

sheep farming and wool production;

hydraulic engineering and water management;

local craftsmanship and industrial development;

the economic transformation of Monte Amiata;

the families who managed and maintained the industrial complex;

the environmental changes that transformed the valley over time.

Particular attention is dedicated to the hydraulic system of the Acqua d’Alto, whose springs and waterfalls powered the machinery of the mill through canals, pipelines, water intakes and turbines built during the late nineteenth century.

The archive also preserves the memory of the Torracca and Ariani families, who played an important role in the administration of the factory and in the development of the hydraulic infrastructure connected to the valley and to the first water supply system of Arcidosso.

After the decline of textile production, the area underwent a further transformation through the extraction of the so-called “red earth”, a natural pigment material found in the surrounding soil. This later phase deeply altered the landscape of the former industrial site and marked the final transformation of the Acqua d’Alto valley.

Today the remains of the Lanificio di Arcidosso survive as a rare testimony of industrial archaeology on Monte Amiata.

This project was created to preserve that memory and make historical materials accessible to researchers, visitors and anyone interested in the industrial history of the Amiata region.

Most of the historical archive is currently available in Italian in order to preserve the original language and historical context of the sources.

Historical texts and documentation based on “Il lanificio di Arcidosso” by Giacomo Ariani, published in Arcidosso, il tempo che fu (2005).

About the Historical Archive The Lanificio di Arcidosso project was created with the aim of preserving and sharing the historical memory of one of the most important industrial sites on Monte Amiata.
